More than a dozen homes and a school were flattened by a tornado that swept through Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine state, on Sunday.

Kyaw Than, the administrator of the city’s Mingan quarter, told The Voice Weekly that the storm struck at around 5pm.

“I heard a noise like a plane.. Then [the tornado] happened for a few seconds and destroyed houses. We are lucky that no one was killed.”

Maung Thein Wai, a chicken farmer, said the winds killed most of his livestock – of 3,000 chicken, just 200 remain.
