Smokers will like this. Anti-smoking groups will not.

At least one cigarette brand has rolled out a special promotion for Thingyan: protective cases that keep your smokes dry.

A clerk at a City Mart Express store provided the case for free this week with the purchase of a pack of Winstons. It was unclear what other brands were also involved.

For easier use, the transparent case, which says “Stay True” on the outside and can accommodate a pack of cigarettes and a lighter, snaps firmly shut, keeping the water that gets sprayed all over the place during the festival out. A lanyard connected to the top means it can be slung over the neck and worn, like a press pass.

The promotion is not so surprising. Protective cases for wallets and cell phones are par for the course during Thingyan, which kicks off on Monday.

Japan Tobacco International, the company that sells Winston in Myanmar, did not immediately return a request for comment.
