Three men have been sentenced to death for raping a woman and stabbing her husband to death behind Naypyitaw’s Junction Center last year.
The Dakhina District court handed down the sentence to Aung Tin Myo, Kyaw Maung and Zaw Myo Thu on Tuesday, while giving Myo Zaw Win, who was 15 at the time of the crime, seven years in prison.
While the death penalty still exists in Myanmar, it is rarely carried out.
According to police, the four men rode up to the couple at around 1am on September 30, knocking their bike over. Two of them raped the woman, who afterwards fled on foot, while the other two stabbed her husband.
When she returned to the scene the following morning, she found her husband dead, with stab wounds to his head, neck and ears.
