Thousands protest coal-fired power plant in Myanmar’s Mon State

Opposition to a coal-fired power plant in Mon State’s Anden Village reached new heights Tuesday morning as thousands came out to protest the proposal by Thai-based Toyo-Thai company.

Demonstrators sat on the ground and waved signs in English and Burmese saying “No coal.”

While the project isn’t supposed to be built for a few years, local residents have expressed concerns about potential pollution and health impacts. Others, meanwhile, say the area needs better access to electricity as many rely on generators.

The protest lasted from 7am to 10am. No injuries or arrests were reported.
