A third of Yangon bus commuters spend FOUR HOURS in traffic every day

More than a third of Yangon commuters who take buses spend four hours traveling two and from work every day, according to a new report.

That’s about 20 hours a week lost to the city’s ever worsening traffic.

The report by auto trading site Motor.com, published in state-run newspaper the Global New Light of Myanmar, surveyed about 500 commuters in the commercial capital between late 2014 and early 2015.

It found that 44 per cent of those who travel by bus spend between 1 and 2 hours. A further 35 per cent said it took them twice that time. FOUR HOURS IN TRAFFIC. EVERY DAY.

FYI, these are the worst areas for traffic jams, according to the report: Pyay Road, between Myaynigone and Hanthawady roundabout, Hledan Junction, Tamwe Junction, Bayinnaung flyover and Theingyizay market.

About 26 per cent of commuters blamed the gridlock on woeful driving, while 16 per cent mentioned the huge increase in cars on the roads and 15 per cent cited poor infrastructure.

“Traffic moving at a snail’s pace in the congested spots makes us feel despondent,” Ko Maung Oo told The Global New Light of Myanmar. “Our precious time has been stolen on the buses stranded in daily rush hour congestion.”

About 79 percent of Yangon’s population use buses for their commute, according to the newspaper.
