Thief sets fire to toilets in bungled bank robbery

Police say a man arrested after a botched bank robbery in Magwe Region yesterday had set fire to the building’s toilets in an attempt to create a diversion.

While staff at the Pauk Township Kanbawza Bank were distracted, Ko Myo Satt, 28, allegedly tried to snatch cash lying on a counter.

But the stunt attracted the attention of customers and security guards, who caught him.

“It was about 1pm, and also the first day that the bank had been opened, so it was crowded with customers,” witness Ko Lwin Oo Myint told the Myanmar Times

The man tried to create chaos by shouting ‘fire, fire’. But he was detained as he was about to run out, after taking a bag of cash from the counter.”

The alleged thief was being questioned by local police last night.
