Mandalay police have launched extra patrols around the moat that surrounds the historic palace walls in an effort to crackdown on boozing.
Last year, 3,858 people were reprimanded in connection with alcohol and causing a public nuisance in the area near the centuries-old former home of the monarchy, the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar reported.
Police have taken action against a further 949 so far this year.
“Some people drink liquor on the pavement of the moat in the evening,” District Commander Lt-Col Sein Tun was quoted as saying.
“Police educate them not to do so and order them to go home.”
There was no clarification about what form that ‘education’ takes.
