Tests reveal 61 Mon chili powder brands containing carcinogens

According to 7Day, 61 brands of chili powder that come from Mon State are being recalled due to failure to comply with FDA standards.

Authorities had sent samples of 79 chili powder brands that didn’t have FDA approval to Naypyidaw for further testing.

Among the 79, 61 were found to contain a carcinogen called Aflatoxin B1, which can severely damage an individual’s immune system; in particular, tests have shown that viral infections are more severe in HIV positive individuals who have been exposed to Aflatoxin B1. Extended exposure to Aflatoxin B1 can also result in liver damage and liver cancer.

Right now, the 61 brands are mainly being sold in the state’s capital, Mawlamyine.

Although plans are being made to confiscate the contaminated brands from all the companies in the industry that produce and sell them, authorities have yet to publicize a list naming said brands.
