Telenor tells customers to swap SIMs ahead of 4G launch

Telenor has advised its subscribers to swap their SIMs for 4G-ready alternatives ahead of an eventual high-speed network upgrade.

The Norwegian telco, which had more than 12 million customers as of late 2015, told Frontier Myanmar that staff will replace the cards for free at any Telenor stores.

Here’s the thing: there are no 4G services in Myanmar and the government has not yet released the necessary spectrum.

But that’s not stopping Telenor which, since launching in 2014, has developed the biggest 3G network in Myanmar.

“These SIMs are future-ready and will help easy transition for customers when Telenor launch 4G in the future,” said spokesperson Ni Ni Myint.

“At present, the government has not awarded spectrum licenses for 4G services in Myanmar. There will be wide communications around this and around the service availability when it becomes available.”

You betcha. After years of sluggish speeds, we are so ready.
