Telenor Myanmar celebrates 1st birthday

Happy Belated Birthday, Telenor Myanmar.

On Sunday, the Norway-based company’s local operator marked 1 year since it rolled out services in Mandalay on September 27, 2014.

Starting with nearly 70 cell towers, Telenor Myanmar now has 3,000, with a goal of more than 8,000, according to Mobile World Live.

“We are about a third of the way through and that remains our goal in the next three to four years,” Telenor Myanmar CEO Petter Furberg was quoted as saying in a statement marking the milestone.

While the company launched after Ooredoo, it has surpassed the Qatar-based firm in subscribers and market share, coming in second to state-backed Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications.

Furberg said in the Myanmar Times that the company now has more than 10 million customers. More than half are “engaging” with data.

As the Times pointed out, the year has not been without setbacks, including the discovery of child labor in Telenor Myanmar’s supply chain.

But in a country where child labor is rife, the discovery did not make many waves or stop expansion. According to Furberg, Telenor Myanmar now has the largest 3G network of any other operator.
