Telenor to hold vanity number auction in Yangon for charity

Telenor Myanmar will auction up to 100 cool-looking phone numbers next week in an effort to raise money for the non-profit education group myME.

Now is the time to start thinking about how awesome it would be to answer the “what is your number” question by saying, “it’s easy, it’s 09777777777,” or a variation thereof.

But it’s not cheap. Prices start at 3 million kyat per number (that’s about $2,400), according to a statement from the Norway-based telecommunications firm, which says it has 14 million subscribers in Myanmar.

The auction is scheduled for February 25th at the Chatrium Hotel in Yangon.

Here are the somewhat complicated instructions for signing up, which has to be done before February 21st:

“Interested bidders may register by sending a request with their name, mailing address, email address, NRC [National Registration Card] or company details, and bank account details to specialnumber@telenor.com.mm or by calling (0)979 7000097.”
