Teenage man arrested for allegedly filming women in Myanmar Plaza restroom

Yangon police have arrested a 19-year-old man who is suspected of secretly filming women using a restroom at the Myanmar Plaza shopping mall in Bahan Township.

A police report says that suspect Kyaw Min Khant is said to have entered a women’s restroom on the ground floor of the mall on the night of Aug. 18. He was allegedly caught by victims while in the act of filming them, and the mall’s staff reported his behavior to police.

Officers from the Bahan Township police station inspected Kyaw Min Khant’s phone and found photos and videos taken in the Myanmar Plaza restroom.

Kyaw Min Khant has been charged under sections 354 and 509 of the Penal Code. Section 354 outlaws any “assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty” and carries a prison term of up to two years. Section 509 outlaws any “word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman” and carries a prison term of up to one year.
