Teen girls found in car in Pyin Oo Lwin say they were trafficked: police

A 40-year-old woman is on the run from police who say she lured five teenage girls from their homes in the Irrawaddy Delta to Pyin Oo Lwin, in Mandalay Region, for illicit purposes.

The girls, all aged 14, were allegedly approached on their way home from school and told that they could earn up to $500 per month if they came to Yangon to meet the woman, who has not been named.

“The kids gathered at around 3:30pm on the same day, then they came to Yangon by boat,” an unnamed officer from Pyin Oo Lwin police station told 7 Day.

Police stations around the country were on alert after the girls were reported missing on Monday. But by the time officers found the girls, in a car in Pyin Oo Lwin, a colonial hill-station a couple of hours’ drive from Mandalay the following day, the alleged trafficker was gone.

The girls have reportedly been collected by their parents.
