Suu Kyi hosts interfaith prayers at Yangon home

Aung San Suu Kyi invited representatives of Myanmar’s different religions to her home by Yangon’s Inya Lake for an interfaith prayer session on Martyrs Day yesterday.

The guests observed a two-minute silence during the afternoon ceremony, to pay respect to Suu Kyi’s father, independence leader Aung San, who was shot and killed with several other politicians on July 19, 1947.

The state counselor made a speech before handing the microphone to religious leaders including Cardinal Charles Maung Bo, a prolific advocate for interfaith harmony, according to a release on her official Facebook page. Muslim and Jewish leaders were among the guests.

Also present were Vice-President Van Thio and NLD patron Tin Oo as well as, more surprisingly, army chief Min Aung Hlaing, Vice-President Myint Swe and former speaker Shwe Mann.
