Two suspects have been arrested in the murder of Eleven Media Group reporter Soe Moe Tun in Monywa last week.
Eleven News reported that the suspects are a manager and an employee of an as yet unnamed KTV. They were also two of the last people to have been in contact with Soe Moe Tun before the murder.
“Yesterday, we arrested two suspicious individuals and are currently interrogating them. As of right now, we can’t say that they are the culprits,” Police Lieutenant Thein Swe from the Monywa Police Station told Eleven.
A forensic search of the crime scene had revealed that the murder was premeditated and executed with precision, with the offenders having left no fingerprints behind. Instead, police had been going through the victim’s cell phone log and interrogating those who had last heard from him.
Authorities have declined to provide more information on the suspects’ identities while they are conducting the interrogations. However, officials confirmed that new developments had been made in the case.
“This morning, we also went to the KTV and investigated the place. There, we confiscated a wooden stick that belongs to the manager…We think we’re getting close. We’re planning on arresting additional suspicious individuals according to new intel that we’ve received.”
At Eleven, Soe Moe Tun covered Monywa and the surrounding areas, focusing on illegal logging and KTV operations.
Before his death, he had reported on the increasing number of illegal KTVs in Monywa and even personally brought the issue to the attention of the Sagaing Region chief minister. Local reporters and acquaintances believe that his murder is connected to his KTV stories.
