State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi has congratulated Donald Trump for his victory in the US presidential election and expressed her desire to strengthen the relationship between Myanmar and the US.
In Myanmar, many believe Suu Kyi to be a friend of Hillary Clinton, whom Trump defeated and who was vital to the rapprochement between the US and Myanmar during her term as US Secretary of State.
Trump, on the other hand, is known for isolationist rhetoric and commitments to abandoning American trade agreements.
NLD spokesman and leading member Win Htein has said: “I wanted Hillary Clinton to win in the election. Trump would not even know where Myanmar is, if asked. So the US’s relationship with Myanmar is likely to suffer.”
