Flooding could worsen in Yangon as authorities consider diverting water from a nearly overloaded dam on the outskirts of the city.
The Nga Moe Yeik dam in Yangon Division’s Hle Gu Township (about 30 miles from downtown Yangon) is three inches short of being at capacity, the Voice Weekly reported, citing the Yangon Division Dam and Drain Department.
Min Swe, the director of the department, said authorities may try and redirect water to a nearby stream if there’s a problem.
“If the dam will pass over its final water level, we will transfer water to Nga Moe Yeik stream. [However] As the water in this stream is overflowing, some suburbs around this stream will suffer from flooding.”
Areas that could be affected include Hle Gu, Mingalardon, North and South Okkala, Thingangyun and Dagon Myothit townships, according to the Voice.
