Singapore investigates allegations of ticket scalping at Myanmar-Thailand SEA Games final

Myanmar football fans behind a social storm over allegations that tickets for the SEA Games final against Thailand last week were re-sold at inflated prices finally have some vindication.

The Singapore SEA Games Organising Committee has said it is collaborating with the authorities to investigate the claims.

Toh Boon Yi, Chief, Corporate and Community Outreach at SINGSOC told Channel News Asia that they sold 2,050 discounted tickets to Golden Myanmar Group for below the standard S$20 price.

They then took back that discount after finding that Golden Myanmar Group, which sold to Singapore-based Myanmar citizens, did not pass it on to customers, he said.

“We now understand that tickets were sold at S$25 with the difference allegedly donated to a charitable cause. SINGSOC is reviewing the matter with the relevant authorities,” he said.

Just before the June 15 match, which Myanmar lost 3-0, scores of Myanmar football fans shared a Facebook post that accused a shop in Singapore’s Penisula Plaza of charging $25 per ticket.

“The shop owner said they bought the tickets at S$20 each, and made a profit of S$5 per ticket. They said they have donated all the profits (S$8,500 in total) to the Myanmar U23 football team,” the post on the Myanmar Football Lovers page said.

“If you purchase more than 100 SEA Games tickets, they would cost S$13 each. The price is also shown on the tickets… All are interested to see how the Singapore police, IRAS and SINGSOC will handle this matter.”
