Beleaguered parliamentary speaker Shwe Mann visited his home constituency in Bago Region over the weekend, reportedly telling locals that he still had ambitions to improve the nation.
The ruling party lawmaker will stand in Pyu township, Taungoo District, despite his recent public ousting from the leadership, according to Radio Free Asia.
U Ko Oo, an officer with the Taungoo division of the Union Election Commission, said nobody had objected to his candidacy.
Shwe Mann was sacked as chairman of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party in a midnight reshuffle earlier this month.
According to Eleven Media, he made a speech in Taungoo, saying: “I have an ambition to improve not only this town but the whole country…. Sometimes influence is better than power, as one can misuse power.”
