Shwe Mann projects confidence ahead of election

Union Solidarity and Development Party bigwig and presumed presidential candidate Shwe Mann showed no signs of election jitters in an interview with the BBC’s Myanmar service.

He said the public believed in the ruling party because of the USDP-guided transition from military rule.

“We have the proof from our work for the transformation, that’s why people understand us. So we have no worries about the election,” he said, according to a report in Mizzima.

He also said, again, that regardless of results he would work with Aung San Suu Kyi because of their mutual “understanding” and “trust,” but he didn’t tip his hand on the party’s presidential choices.

The winning party will choose the president after the November 8 vote but the candidate doesn’t necessarily need to be elected in the poll, as became clear last month when President Thein Sein’s comments about not running were misinterpreted as a withdrawal from the race.

His spokesperson said he wasn’t out and hadn’t made a decision yet. Shwe Mann, a parliamentary speaker, has expressed interest in the post on multiple occasions.

“We will announce in time,” he said in the BBC interview.
