Severe flooding in central Myanmar leaves several dead and more than 1,000 stranded on trains

Heavy rainfall in central Myanmar has left several dead and more than 1,000 stranded aboard bogged-down trains, local media reported.

Several days of torrential rain and flooding in Sagaing Division last week and over the weekend killed at least eight people, including two rescue workers, according to the Voice Weekly.

A ruptured dam, meanwhile, caused six trains heading from Myitkyina to Mandalay to stall.

Hundreds of passengers – stranded on Friday – were still stuck as of yesterday, the Myanmar Times reported.

“Local ward and township officials are keeping them supplied with food and water, but rescue attempts have been hampered by damage to nearby bridges,” an official told the paper.

In Sagaing, waters were reportedly as high as 1.2 metres in some areas.

Win Chit Htoo, a fireman, drowned as he was trying to help people in Nyaung Kine village, Kaw Lin Township on Saturday and a policeman died the same day in Shwe Bo Myit Kyi Nah sector, according to the Voice.

A woman and child in Mae Chan township are also reportedly among the dead.
