Set your alarms for Martyrs’ Day silence, Irrawaddy Minister urges public

Get your alarm set for the Martyrs’ Day silence, and don’t think of using any funny ringtones, Irrawaddy Regional Minister Manh Johnny has warned ahead of the annual July 19 celebrations.

Writing on Facebook, the official urged all residents to take part in the 90-second silence held next Tuesday to commemorate 69 years since the assassination of independence leader Aung San in 1947.

Alarms should be a ‘siren tone,’ he clarified.

“I would respectfully like to request to give respect to General Aung San and other martyrs, by setting alarm at 10:37 on the day with a siren tone and staying silent for 90 seconds.”

Motorists usually honk their horns, he added. That is, even more than usual.

Pathein, the Irrawaddy Region’s capital, has all sorts of events planned for the day, including speeches and music at City Hall.

The President’s Office has ordered all government organizations to lower the country’s flag to half-mast on the day, the state-backed Global New Light of Myanmar reported. State-backed TV channels will also observe the silence.
