Daw Aye Aye Mu, the MP for Kalay Township, Sagain Region, told parliament on May 30 that government staffers in Myanmar must learn to treat their constituents and colleagues with respect rather than abusing and exploiting them.
“Some high-ranking officials scold their subordinates rudely, and sometimes they even hurt them physically. If a staffer makes a mistake, their punishment should be in line with the office rules,” the MP said. “Such bad-mannered officials should be penalized, and if necessary, given relationship management training.”
She added that many citizens decide not to seek help from government offices because staffers are inhospitable.
“The Civil Servant Law from 2013 instructs all the staff members of the government to treat citizens politely. But the clause is not enforced. Every civil servant should know that the people are not their servants,” Daw Aye Aye Mu said.
Six MPs supported her statement, Eleven reported.
Anti-Corruption Commission chairman Mya Win said: “Government office functions are unnecessarily complicated because of irresponsible staffers. Sometimes, they intentionally make it complicated in the hope of receiving bribes. This is how civil servants lose credibility.”
He called on civil servants to avoid bribery and procrastination.
