Russian warship docks at Yangon port as Myanmar’s president heads to Sochi

We’re sensing some pretty warm relations between Myanmar and Russia lately.

A Russian anti-submarine warship docked at Thilawa Port, just south of Yangon, yesterday, bringing naval officers for talks with Yangon Region Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein.

The same day, President Htin Kyaw jetted off for the Russian resort city of Sochi for Russia-ASEAN talks. Russian ambassador to Myanmar, Vasily B. Pospelov, reportedly waved him off.

Both visits are intended to boost military links and strengthen long-standing friendship between the countries, officials told the Global New Light of Myanmar.

The countries have historically enjoyed good relations. Last year, Moscow agreed to supply Myanmar with the technology for nuclear energy.

Last month, Russia said it would supply Myanmar with some new fighter jets.
