Ruling party hardliner sent to Singapore for medical treatment

Senior ruling party lawmaker Aung Thaung has been flown to Singapore for emergency medical treatment, local media is reporting.

The MP, a former industry minister for the military junta and close associate of Than Shwe, left on Thursday after developing a brain swelling, 7 Days Daily reported.

The newspaper quoted a doctor as saying the lawmaker was in the intensive-care unit.

Last year, Aung Thaung was blacklisted by the US, who accused him of blocking major political reforms and linked him to waves of anti-Muslim violence that have swept the country in recent years.

This is a breaking story and will be updated as details emerge.
