The retirement age for civil servants will remain at 60 after the Union parliament on Thursday approved a proposal on urging the government not to raise it to 63.
A group of 14 lawmakers discussed the pros and cons of the proposal, Eleven Myanmar reported.
A ruling party MP submitted an urgent proposal earlier this week citing unemployment, brain-drain and low promotion prospects for younger people as factors against raising the age.
“It is too much to work beyond 60 years old,” lawmaker Khine Maung Yee said. “The only people who want to work beyond the pension age are people whose lives are not OK. They shouldn’t be able to turn down their pensions in exchange for power.”
