The government yesterday urged people residents in low-lying areas of Sagaing Region to evacuate their homes as two rivers rose to dangerously high levels, risking further flooding.
The Chindwin River reached up to six feet above its danger point near areas including Phaungpyin, Mawlaik, Mingin, Kalewa and Monywa, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology announced.
The Ayeyarwady River has risen one foot above its maximum level in Pakokku and Nyaung-U, home to the Bagan temples, and is predicted to swell further, according to state-run newspaper the Global New Light of Myanmar.
Heavy rainfall wrought devastation across the country last month, claiming at least 120 lives and displacing more than 1.6 million people.
