Reports reveal increase in city’s crime rates compared to previous years

Authorities say that there have been 163 reported murder cases in Yangon between January and November of this year, according to 7Day Daily.

The report also noted that not all murder investigations have been solved. Yes, that means there are some possible murderers on the run within the city and probably the rest of the country.

Unsolved cases from this year include the murder of a taxi driver in Mingaladon township, and the murder of four family members of an ex-police officer, also in Mingaladon.

In 2014, there were a total of 102 murder cases within the city. The township with the most cases was Mingaladon.

Additionally, there have been 212 reported cases of rape this year — double the amount from last year’s 101 cases.

While this increase in crime is of course bad news, we can’t tell if it’s because there really is more crime being committed each year, or because more incidents are actually being reported to the authorities. This is especially important to keep in mind with rape cases, which have been brought to the public’s attention this year, with citizens even campaigning for heavier prison sentences for sex offenders.
