Two Myanmar men were arrested in Thailand on Monday on suspicion of murdering a Myanmar woman and hiding her body in a Bangkok sewer, The Nation reported this week.
The victim’s body was found on the night of August 16 in a sewer under a bridge in Bangkok’s Prawet district. Her chest had been stabbed five times, and her throat was slit.
Relatives identified the victim as 25-year-old Toon. Her sister Paeng told police that Toon had developed mental health problems and an alcohol addiction after breaking up with her girlfriend late last year. She said their mother had kicked Toon out of her home, leaving her without any permanent place to live.
Paeng also said Toon had the appearance of a man.
On August 29, Bangkok police announced that they had arrested two suspects the previous day, both Myanmar men. Tin Win Aung, 21, was arrested in Mae Sot district, and other man identified only as Juay, 31, was arrested at a house in Bangkok where police also found a seven-inch knife that is believed to be the murder weapon.
The police announced that the men confessed to killing Toon after she refused to have sex with them.
According to their confession, the two men had been drinking with Toon on the evening of August 15 before going under a bridge to take yaba pills. The two men asked to have sex with Toon, and when she refused, they attacked her. Toon fought back, and Tin Win Aung punched her. Juay, who had been Toon’s friend for three years, stabbed her with a knife, and then Tin Win Aung slit her throat. They put her body in the sewer and fled the scene separately.
During their investigation, Bangkok police found that Tin Win Aung had spent three years in a Myanmar prison for a murder he committed when he was 16.
Once they were in police custody, the suspects were ordered to perform a 20-minute reenactment of the murder at the scene of the crime while Toon’s relatives watched.
