President to skip Martyrs’ Day in Yangon, but Suu Kyi to attend

President Htin Kyaw will not attend the Martyrs’ Day even in Yangon next week.

Zaw Htay, deputy general manager of the president’s office, was quoted in the Popular News Journal saying that Htin Kyaw will instead attend a commemoration in the capital, Naypyitaw.

State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and Vice-President Myint Swe will be at the even in Yangon, the paper reported.

Falling every year on July 19, the day marks the anniversary of the 1947 assassinations of nine people, including Suu Kyi’s father and independence hero Aung San.

All were killed at the Secretariat in Yangon, which opened to the public on July 19 last year and saw a massive turnout.
