Members of Myanmar’s parliament are concerned for their own safety following the assassination of NLD lawyer U Ko Ni, several MPs said at a press conference on Monday.
“[The assassination] happened in public, which shows that killers can slaughter anyone at any time. We should be more careful,” said MP May Win Myint of Mayangone Township, according to Eleven.
“It’s a threat to the country’s rule of law and to the people. Our country’s leaders are irreplaceable. I’m worried about it. But I think they will also be more careful,” said MP Thandar of Ein May Township.
The MPs also said U Ko Ni’s assassination may damage Myanmar’s image since it was carried out in broad daylight at the country’s main international airport.
“Safety measures for the country’s top leaders should be tightened. It’s a huge loss not only for his family but also for the whole nation. I feel very sad about his death, and it’s very shocking,” said MP Aung Kyi Nyunt of Taungdwingyi Township.
“I feel very sorry about U Ko Ni’s death. He stood very firmly on the side of democracy. I’m also worried about the safety of our leaders. I don’t want the killing to be a hindrance for the country’s democratization efforts. Our citizens care very much about politics. I want to tell the people to stay calm in the meantime. This is a very sensitive period,” added MP May Win Myint.
