Police announce crackdown on drinking near Mandalay moat

We’ve heard this one before.

Mandalay police have announced – again – that they are cracking down on people drinking in public places, particularly beside the historic moat.

This time, offenders will face jail time.

“The moat is a recreation area for people,” said deputy officer Sein Htun, as quoted in 7Day. “We warned before, but they kept doing it, so we introduced fines. Now they keep doing this, that’s why we will imprison them.”

A group of 10 people, including two women, were arrested on May 15 for drinking and throwing bottles into the river from Sagaing bridge.
