Monywa Police are trying to track down the owners of several plastic bags filled with drugs valued at MMK500 million, or about US$368,000, discovered lying on the roadside.

The plastic bags containing the drugs were found scattered along several different roads in Monywa’s Htan Taw and Nanda Won wards. However, after interrogating witnesses, police determined the haul originated from just two stashes.

“Some kids [who found the drugs] took the bags and were trying to open them, and then dumped them once they realized that it was drugs and that the police were confiscating them,” Police Lieutenant Ye Aung of the Monywa Police Station explained to Kumudra.

Police collected a total of 1,071 baggies containing approximately 100,000 methamphetamine tablets worth an estimated MMK500 million, and a yellow and white powder that they believe to be heroin. According to the Myanmar Times, the pills and powder are cumulatively worth upwards of K1.6 Billion.

An official case has been opened, and investigations are underway to locate the culprits.

This is the first time that such a large amount of drugs has been discarded within the city. One local who spoke to Kumudra expressed his concerns, saying, “As a Monywa citizen, this is really worrying. How far have these drugs spread within the city?”
