Plainclothes vigilantes raze last remaining squatters’ shelters in Mingaladon

Hundreds of plainclothes vigilantes descended on Mingaladon township’s industrial zone late Saturday afternoon to finish a mass eviction of squatters that began on Tuesday.

Men and women wearing blue hats and carrying rods, who said they were municipal police but were not in uniform, demolished scores of remaining shelters as stricken residents stood by.

They said all the homes would be cleared by the morning.

“We have nowhere to go,” Khin Mar Cho, who said she had lived in the area for five years, told Coconuts Yangon.

“We will stay where whatever they do. All the people around here are like this.”

Hundreds of other residents, some of who said they had lived there for years, were forced out on Tuesday after thousands of police turned up with bulldozers.

They said they had received a notice the day before from the police warning them to leave, with no explanation given.

As of 6pm Saturday, the gates to the community were sealed off, with no cars allowed in or out. Remaining residents stood around under tarpaulin as the simple wooden houses were dismantled.

One woman, who had recently given birth, grew dizzy and collapsed.
