IN PICTURES: Inside the memorial hall for Myanmar’s ‘8888’ uprising

Today is the 28th anniversary of the August 8, 1988 student uprising against Myanmar’s junta.

The protests and the deadly crackdown that ensued elevated Aung San Suu Kyi to prominence, but they are difficult to learn about outside of history books.

However, last year, a group of activists involved in the events of ‘8888’ unveiled a temporary museum of sorts that captures key moments of the pro-democracy revolution.

This is the entrance.

With luck they may be getting a permanent space soon, but for now the photos, a film reel and other archival items are on display at the space, which is free to visit (though donations are accepted).

The memorial hall is a little far from Yangon but well worth your time as there is really not much else like it in the country.

It is right next to the 88 Generation offices on Thu Mingalar Road in Thingangyun Township.
