In photos: Yangon’s Chinatown marks New Year with majestic lion dancing

If you haven’t seen traditional Chinese lion dancing, now’s the time.

Hundreds of people have turned out so far this week to watch nightly performances in Latha Township to mark the start of the year of the monkey.

The shows, which mix dance and martial arts, feature performers dressed in elaborate animal costumes and balanced precariously high on poles.

Sint Ooe Dann Street this week, the poles were surrounded by sofas. Just in case.

A total of 17 teams from across Myanmar are competing to be crowned the best dancers.

The final show, with a dragon dance, is on Saturday night. The performances start at about 7pm.
