In photos: Myanmar’s new lawmakers nominate their president

Yesterday was a historic day for Myanmar, as its new batch of lawmakers turned out to vote for the nomination of the nation’s first democratically elected president in decades.

So the occasion demanded, of course, appropriate costume.

MPs donned the party colors as they voted to confirm the nomination of Htin Kyaw, a senior aide to Suu Kyi, to be the country’s next president.

The shade of darkish brown orange – worn by most, barring Suu Kyi, who chose blue – is closely associated with the fighting peacock symbol of the party.

The 69-year-old is expected to win a vote next week from among two NLD candidates – the upper house nominee is Chin representative Henry Van Thio – and a military one, Myint Swe.

The losing candidates will become vice-presidents.

In the lower house yesterday, Htin Kyaw scored 274 votes and Sai Mauk Khan, from the former ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party, got just 29.

Henry Van Thio beat Khin Aung Myint by 148 to 13.
