Operators to be selected for Yangon water taxi service

Yangon Region authorities are expected this week to select companies to operate the city’s water taxi service, announced regional transport authority secretary Dr. Maung Aung.

“We have received bids from two companies. There will be two water taxi routes, so both companies may be selected. One route will run on the Nga Moe Yeik Creek, while the other route will be on the Hlaing River. Several types of watercraft will be needed for the service, which we are trying to procure now,” said Dr. Maung Aung, according to Eleven.

The water taxi service is expected by local authorities to reduce traffic congestion in Yangon.

The project was put out to tender on November 20, 2016, and bidding closed on December 26. The two companies that submitted bids are Tin Tin Myanmar Company and Golden Palace Company.

“After they are selected, the companies will need to conduct their own pilot surveys. If they import ships from abroad, the project will be completed more quickly. They say it takes at least 45 days to build a ship,” Dr. Maung Aung added.

Neither the number of vessels nor the fares for the water taxi service have been determined yet, according to the Yangon Region Transport Authority.
