Onyx is back – and it’s just as cheap as ever

When bargain eatery Onyx closed its doors last year, many commiserated. While the setting left something to be desired – the toilet, especially – it was pretty much the only place to get a decent Western meal, with wine, for under $10.

Now it’s back, in a new location set to open “probably” at the end of the week, according to the manager. Check in with their Facebook page.

If you were acquainted with the old joint – a simple tables and chairs setup in a somewhat rundown colonial house – the new incarnation, opposite the German embassy in Bahan, may come as a surprise.

It’s a hangar-like space, with industrial grey walls and tree-like installations on the walls.

The menu, however, sounds comfortingly familiar.

Kyaw Soe, the manager, said the new restaurant would serve up steaks, pasta, salads and other Western favorities.

Most importantly – the prices are still low. Steak will cost around K7,000 or K8,000, he said, while other dishes will be as low as K3,000.

A glass of house wine goes for around K5,000.

K5,000!

Welcome back.

The new location is at #12 Bogyoke Museum Lane, opposite the German embassy.
