Yangon’s colonial-era Kyeemyindaing Railway Station is the focus of a major development that seeks to upgrade the stop and the state-owned land around it.

The government has called on companies to place an Expression of Interest in the project, which includes upgrades to the station as well as adjacent multi-use developments such as hotels and office complexes, by August 5, according to media reports.

A heritage building, the Kyeemyindaing station in Sanchaung Township is part of a handful of stops on the city’s circular line, including Yangon’s Central Station, which JICA has identified for so-called transit-oriented development in its transport master plan.

Kyeemyindaing is referred to as Kemmendine on many maps for the circular line.

“We chose an area that wouldn’t affect rail transportation, wouldn’t affect other future [development] plans, to upgrade and revitalize the buildings and markets [nearby],” Thet Lwin, general manager of the Ministry of Rail Transportation, told the Irrawaddy.
