Official: “Anti-terrorist forces armed with the latest weapons have been posted in Naypyitaw, Yangon and Mandalay.”

As Jakarta recovers from an Islamic State-inspired terrorist attack that killed at least seven people – most of whom were the attackers – a senior government official says Myanmar is ready to respond to a similar problem if necessary.

“Anti-terrorist forces armed with the latest weapons have been posted in Naypyitaw, Yangon and Mandalay,” deputy home affairs minister Brigadier General Kyaw Zan Myint told parliament on January 13.

His comments were reported in The Myanmar Times.

While not surprising, the information was a revealing look into what steps Myanmar has taken to respond to a Jakarta-style attack.

The official said several possible target sites were already under surveillance, and that in addition to the major cities, three companies of police have been sent to each state and region in Myanmar, where a portion of them will look at terror threats.
