The NLD to review and perhaps scrap two pricey Yangon flyovers

Two flyovers dreamt up by the outgoing Union Solidarity and Development Party could be scrapped under the new government, National League for Democracy lawmakers have said.

The USDP-dominated regional government proposed the overpasses, at the intersection of Kabar Aye Pagoda and Parami Roads and North Okkalapa junction in Yangon, to be built during the 2016-2017 financial year, the Myanmar Times reported.

But the project, worth $26.1 million or nearly 10 per cent of the regional budget, was never implemented.

“We want to know why,” Nyi Nyi, the new MP for South Dagon Township told the Times, adding that her party would scrutinize the details.

Sandar Min, representing Seikgyi Khanaungto Township, said: “We will review the projects and cancel any that do not benefit our country. We will do this on behalf of the people.”

Several flyovers have been constructed in the city in recent years, ostensibly with the intention of tackling mounting traffic woes.

Despite Yangon Mayor Hla Myint announcing a moratorium on building the overpasses – because they didn’t work – parliament approved four more.
