New restrictions put in place for media covering Myanmar parliament

Myanmar’s new National League for Democracy-dominated parliament has only been in session for a week and there are already new rules for the media.

Go figure.

One of our colleagues reports that reporters and photographers have been restricted to the hallways around the chamber of the Union Parliament – where both houses meet – and the “media room,” which is basically a hallway with a television feed of parliament on the second floor.”

The rules apparently apply to all houses of the legislature.

Green and red signs have been put up to designate where you can and cannot interview.

In this area, you’re good.

The new rules were likely inspired by the media melee on February 1, when journalists scampered hither and thither doing interviews and taking photos and annoying people.

Or as we call in the industry, working.
