There has been much to-do over the fact that Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy has poets and artists in the parliamentary mix.
But other backgrounds are well-represented too.
After they take their seats in the first week of February, there will be nine professors, more than 100 people with degrees from medical colleges, more than 30 engineers, and more than 100 with an educational background in law, according to the Popular News Journal.
To be fair, the article does not site comparable figures for the previous parliament, so it’s difficult to say (as the article suggests) that NLD lawmakers have better educations than the ruling party politicians the will be replacing.
Also, not everyone in the party has a degree to brag about.
The article quotes NLD member Dr. Than Win, who wrote on his Facebook page that “there will be different classes of education background from primary level to professor level.”
He added that most party MPs have a Bachelor of Science (BS), with a Bachelor of Art (BA) in second place. Then law in third.
“There could be needs in terms of capacity as people chose the institution by not looking at individuals,” he wrote.
