A new master plan for Yangon dividing the city into zones will be drawn up by the recently elected government, the Voice reported today.
Amid rapid and uncontrolled development in recent years, the former military-backed government, which handed over power in March, jointly developed a 2040 master plan with the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
But Yangon Regional Minister Phyo Min Thein this week announced that the new administration were scrutinizing the plan and would likely make changes.
“We are going to draw a town plan,” he said. “There is the 2040 project by JICA but there are some parts of the 2040 plan that may not be suitable. That’s why we will draw the city plan for 50 or 60 years.”
The Yangon City Development Committee says they have already started implementing the 2040 master plan by improving the water system and expanding the city in various areas.
