New administration to prioritize green space in Yangon, with plans for parks and playgrounds

Two new parks will be built in Yangon and 11 others are getting spruced up for public use over the next year, according to the Yangon City Development Committee.

Six new playgrounds will also be built before April 2017, an unnamed official told the Global New Light of Myanmar.

“We have short-term, medium-term and long-term plans to both upgrade and renovate the parks and playgrounds as well as build new ones,” the official said. “Besides, we are also maintaining them on a regular basis in such a way as to suit the relaxation and recreation needs of people of all ages.”

Under the former military-backed government, several parks and football grounds were sold off to the private sector. Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy promised to help restore them ahead of last November’s general election.
