Police are interrogating suspects in the case of an armed bank robbery in Myeik, near Myanmar’s southern tip. Bank employees and customers are among the suspects.

On Tuesday, a gun-wielding bandit entered the bank wearing a helmet and demanded cash from the bank’s staff before fleeing. There were 10 people in the bank at the time.

Police filed the case under Section 392 of the Penal Code, which imposes a maximum 10-year prison sentence for robbery.

“We are interrogating bank employees and customers. Some suspects are being called to the police station for further questions. We are sharing CCTV footage of the culprit to nearby police stations,” Inspector Aung Win Hlaing, deputy head of the Myeik Township police station, told Eleven.

He added: “It’s a shame this robbery happened in the downtown area, but we may be able to arrest him, as we can guess his appearance.”

Police have placed barriers at bridges and checkpoints in Myeik, Palaw, Kyunsu, and Taninthayi townships in an effort to catch the culprit.
