You know Viber is big in Myanmar when the senior figure in government is on it.
The office of President Htin Kyaw, who was tapped by Aung San Suu Kyi to fill the job as she is constitutionally barred from it, launched a public Viber chat today
It already has nearly 6,000 followers as of this afternoon.
The purpose is to provide updates from the goings on of the president.
Viber, the chat and calling service, is huge in Myanmar, with some saying it has more registered users than Facebook, though that seems hard to believe.
To follow have to download the app and go to the public chats section, then search for the “Myanmar President Office.”
Public chats are also popular in Myanmar and many celebrities and some news agencies (including yours truly at “Coconuts Media”) maintain them.
Following a chat doesn’t mean you can respond or comment on what’s posted. You simply receive the updates and can “heart” them if you so choose.
