Myanmar’s outgoing Minister of Information posts reflective and sweet goodbye on Facebook

He packed up his books, his paintings and his computer.

He took a portrait of President Thein Sein “as a remembrance.”

“I am ready to leave after closing [my] laptop,” wrote Ye Htut, Myanmar’s outgoing Information Minister, on January 22.

As Aung San Suu Kyi’s government prepares to take power next month, the last days of the military-backed ruling Union and Solidarity Party are in effect. President Thein Sein has already moved out of his official residence in Naypyitaw.

Ye Htut’s own move was captured on his public Facebook page, a fitting farewell for the man who came to be known as Myanmar’s “Minister for Facebook.”

His following remains large. As on Monday afternoon, the post had received almost 40,000 likes and was shared nearly 3,000 times.

Ye Htut has said before that he will not seek a cabinet position in the new government. Instead, he plans on spending time with his family.

In a comment on his own post, he said he would do what other “retired fathers” in Yangon do.

“I am going to pick up my children from school, sit in the tea shop, and buy newspapers while taking walks.”
