Myanmar’s NLD to punish lawmaker accused of cheating on wife

The National League for Democracy is facing its second scandal in a week after news of an MP’s extramarital affair went viral on Facebook.

The wife of Dr Soe Moe Thu, who represents Irrawaddy Division’s Myaungmya township, filed a lawsuit against him in Mandalay on Sunday, alleging adultery.

“We’ve already warned him once, but he denied [having an affair] at that time,” NLD spokesperson Win Htein told the Irrawaddy. “So, our party discipline enforcement committee will take action against him. We have already cancelled his foreign trip.”

Dr Soe Moe Thu could face a maximum penalty of suspension or expulsion from the party, depending on the results of an internal investigation.

Another MP, Nyan Linn, was embroiled in scandal last Thursday after a Yangon motel accused him of drunkenly threatening their staff. He denies the allegations, saying he was investigating criminal activity.
